Since giving up 13 points and 344 yards of total offense
against Hargrave, South Alabama's defense has smothered
its last four opponents.
The Jaguars have given up an average of 4 points and 225
yards in the last four games and will be seeking their
second shutout of the year in today's 4 p.m. contest at
Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
To keep Milford Academy (7-3) off the scoreboard, South
Alabama (5-0) has to contain running back Travon Van, a
Florida commitment who has accounted for 524 yards running
and receiving this season and scored 9 touchdowns.
"They've got a really good running back,"
said USA coach Joey Jones. "He's probably the best
running back we've faced all year long. We feel like
it's going to be a job to stop him because he can break
it at any time, and that scares you."
Van isn't the only weapon for Milford Academy.
Quarterbacks Nicholas Raven and Mark Giubilato have combined
to throw for 1,093 yards and 16 touchdowns. The top
receivers are Devorn Kinsey (308 yards, 3 TDs) and Austin
Baker (163 yards, 3 TDs). Milford also has an offensive
front that averages 307 pounds.
"I think (Milford) is better offensively than what
we've seen the last couple of weeks," Jones said,
referring to Louisburg and Fork Union.
Despite USA's strong defensive showing, nose tackle
Romelle Jones says the defense isn't satisfied.
"Our coaches preach perfection," said the true
freshman from New Orleans. "We're trying to
improve every game. Our goal each game is to shut out our
opponent. We don't underestimate any of our opponents
and we have respect for everyone on our schedule.
"This week we're working on not giving up big
plays because it seems like we've given up the big play
in every game this season."
South Alabama enters the game averaging 44 points and 407
yards of total offense.
