Trifecta returns on Saturday

The Fit Kid Trifecta returns for Saturday's 22nd annual Senior Bowl Charity Run and aims to tackle obesity and encourage health and fitness among students in Mobile and Baldwin counties.

In order to complete the trifecta, students must finish at least one event in each of Mobile's three major road races — the Senior Bowl Charity Run, the First Light Marathon and the Azalea Trail Run. Those who complete the trifecta will receive recognition at the end of the school year.

"Our mission is to provide opportunities for children to participate in activities that will improve their health and fitness levels," said Peggy Olive, director of the Azalea Trail Run.

Each of the races participating in the trifecta will donate money back to the schools through their local programs. Schools will receive $1 for every registered student and $2 for every student that completes an event.

Olive said 46 children completed the Fit Kid Trifecta last year, and she hopes for more this time.

In Saturday's race, Fit Kid Trifecta participants have the option of running the 10K (6.2 mile), 5K (3.1 mile) or 1-mile fun run.

As of Monday, almost 900 runners had registered for Saturday's race, which is lagging behind last year's total.

Saturday's 5K race starts at 8 a.m. at the intersection of Government and Claiborne streets. The 10K race starts at 8:15 at Government and Conception, and the fun run starts at 10 a.m. at Government and Conception.

All three races will finish at Bienville Square.

Registration for any of the races is $15. Runners can register at the Senior Bowl office at 151 Dauphin Street in downtown Mobile; at McCoy Outdoors at 3498 Springhill Avenue; or online until today at www.seniorbowl.com.
