8 Fitness Myths and Their Truths
By ACSM certified personal fitness trainer Sandy Gross.

As a trainer, my clients often present me with health and fitness myths that I need to dispel. There is so much new information each year and the facts can be difficult to separate from the fiction. Over the next eight weeks, I will discuss the most common fitness myths I hear.

  • Myth #1: "Gaining weight is just a part of getting older"

  • Myth #2: "How can I work my lower abs?"

  • Myth #3: "I do crunches and I can't get that 'six pack' look in my abdominal area!"

  • Myth #4: "I will get really bulky muscles if I lift weights."

  • Myth #5: "But it's fat free..."

  • Myth #6: "I don't want to lift weights because if I stop, my muscles will turn to fat"

  • Myth #7: "I plan to lose 40 pounds on the Mayo Clinic Diet. George at the office lost 40 pounds on it, and his friend Bonnie lost 50 pounds!"

  • Myth #8: "Don't forget to stretch before you workout."
