Sound Off

Have I got a deal for you To the lady who was assaulted with the rifle butt hit to the head: I'd gladly offer you the use of my shotgun to use either end you wish on your assailant. If you are unable to do so yourself, I'd gladly offer you assistance and take your free shot for you. New sidewalk, no red tape I can tell you what to do about your broken sidewalks. My neighbor and I got together and hired a contractor, and they repaved our sidewalks for us. That's what you do. Always asking the government to pay for everything is not the solution What did they do to you? I was reading about the sidewalks and the trees. Most people don't know that the trees are a lot older than the people in Mobile. No need to badmouth them. A breath of fresh air I'm calling about "Don't worship the trees": Does this person not realize the trees and bushes, flowers and everything put out oxygen? We need that to breathe. So we're not worshipping the trees, but pretty soon we won't have any at all, and we won't be able to breathe or anything else. A game of limbo Someone is going to get badly hurt, if not killed, if some of the old stubbed-off moss-covered limbs are not removed on Spring Hill Avenue. Shape up or ship out When the server couldn't convince the parents to control their misbehaving children in the restaurant, the manager came over and ordered them to leave. I could have hugged his neck! We sure need more managers with this kind of courage in Mobile. Helmets for lawmakers Congress investigating NFL's brain injuries? Shouldn't it be the other way around? An enjoyable movie Thank you, Press-Register, for the write-up in your Living section Tuesday on the movie "Play the Game." What an entertaining movie for the 50-plus age group. I wish you could have heard the laughter and happy attendees. Hope this first-time moviemaker gets some awards for this film. Chaos at Ladd-Peebles I am excited about the future for our USA football program. The main concern I have is for the facilities at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The concessions were chaos at the first game even though we did not have a sellout! There is no excuse for running out of condiments at halftime. Pretzels are supposed to be crunchy, not soggy. If beer is going to be served, then proper dispensers should be used, not popping cans for every beer sold. Convicts make poor witnesses How many of you who are unhappy with the outcome of the Herman Thomas trial were there in the courtroom? People I have talked to who were there said that they knew he would be found not guilty because the witnesses against him were not believable. Don't blame the prosecutor or the judge or the defense lawyers for doing their jobs. Stop the fanatics We don't need religious fanatics as governors. That's why Alabama is way behind Mississippi and Florida. We don't have gambling because of fanatics in this state. It needs to be stopped. They're out of control To the people about the towels and soap in the school bathrooms: They can talk to any principal, teacher or janitorial staff, and they'll find out that you cannot keep any of those items in the bathroom. The children stop up the facilities and waste material. There's no way to keep it in there. They just do damage with it. Keep a dictionary handy I was annoyed and appalled at the caller citing Dr. Benjamin's appointment as surgeon general as "a travesty." The use of the word travesty was way over the top because it indicates "a poor, insincere or insulting imitation of something," which is clearly not applicable. May I suggest to the caller that if the purpose was to deride and/or degrade, at least use correct wording in adequately demeaning a person. WANT MORE SOUND OFFs?
