Breast cancer month
draws strong support
The month of October has been designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I have been amazed at the response from the people of Mobile and surrounding areas. It seems that every year the efforts get more extensive.
I, for one, really appreciate what is being done.
For instance, the Mobile County Health Department has been offering free mammography screenings every Saturday in October for qualifying individuals.
For some people, the cost of this test may be what keeps them from being diagnosed in the early stages of the disease, and early diagnosis is extremely important.
I am impressed by the many events that have been held to raise money for research and increase awareness. This takes a great deal of hard work and dedication.
I heard about a local radio station that raised a great deal of money by sponsoring a Request-A-Thon.
This just goes to show you that there are many, many people who have been touched by this devastating disease in one way or another and are anxious to see it eradicated.
Once again, thank you from someone who knows that early detection can be the difference between life and death.
