Sound Off
Friday, November 06, 2009
This is Baldwin Sound Off, where you may speak your mind on anything you wish. Because of the large number of calls we receive, we cannot publish all the comments. Private sector defeating plan I have two government-run health insurance policies — Medicare and the federal employees health benefit program. They are both very well run. Wake up, folks. The big insurance companies are giving our senators and congressional representatives millions of dollars to defeat a public option. They are wrong. A public option is the only way to control insurance company premiums. Time change increases wrecks I can understand some of these people complaining about the time changing. But somebody needs to look into some of these things that are going to happen. I'm sure there has been plenty of accidents and plenty of people killed when they changed the time, because now it's darker and darker when they're coming home at 5 or 5:30. There's going to be many accidents and people killed because of this time change. Small-town plan is growing Beware of Magnolia Springs planning, the mayor and the City Council. They're saying bigger is better now. They used to say that, you know, we just created a little small town to protect ourselves. But now they're expanding out, and they're saying bigger is better. And it appears to be a land grab by elitists. And they're the ones who want to be like Fairhope. Pick up more revenue, match Fairhope, get a salary like the Fairhope mayor's salary in Magnolia Springs. But the residents will pay for it. Stroll in Knoll unforgettable While I was in Fairhope for BirdFest, I walked through Knoll Park — wow, beautiful. The city of Fairhope is commended for preserving and restoring this rare and valuable Southern treasure. Parking problem persists Yesterday, I went to downtown Fairhope to have lunch and to do some shopping, but I couldn't find a parking space. So, I had to go to Malbis and spend my money there. Same old story in Foley I just read the article about Foley updating its land-use map with U.S. 98 supposedly going to be the next hot spot for businesses. Foley doesn't have any new businesses. They said the same thing about Baldwin County 20, and we spent millions of dollars, and there's nothing on highway 20. That money could've been used for a lot of better things. And they also laugh at the people that have houses along 98, saying it's going to grow. The only thing 98 is going to be used for is people leaving Foley and going over to Florida to shop with no taxes. They're just ruining it here for the people of Foley. We've got a big sports complex, and we've now got a high school indoor facility in the works, and all that money could've gone to things that increase jobs and bring new businesses in.
