Sound Off
Wednesday, November 04, 2009
This is Baldwin Sound Off, where you may speak your mind on anything you wish. Because of the large number of calls we receive, we cannot publish all the comments. What did landfill smell like? Will someone please ask the city councilman from Bay Minette who recently toured the landfill in Georgia if he smelled anything? Maybe you saw a seagull or two. Newcomb comment unnecessary First, I want to say I do not know (Eric) Buzbee, I have no contacts with Buzbee, but I do agree that DA Judy Newcomb needs to go, for her remarks. It was uncalled for. Sees purchase as city's folly Borrow, tax, spend. No editorial, no letter to the editor, no Sound Off on Fairhope's latest folly. First, a $7 million bond. Next, a 2-percent sales tax. And now, spend $875,000 for 38 acres of land, when we have many underutilized sports and recreation facilities now. Save money with one pickup What do we have to do to stop twice-a-week garbage pickup in Fairhope? I do believe there are very few households that can fill up one of those huge garbage cans twice a week — especially if they recycle. Also, Fairhope would save a nice little hunk of money. Ready to be city resident Magnolia Springs, please, please, please come across Weeks Bay and annex the west bank. Fairhope's never going to do it. Limit charter boats The charter boats should stop whining about the red snapper limit. It's their fault. I wish we could limit the number of charter boats. You guys are a strain on our environment. Keep money in Baldwin County Very interesting that the Baldwin County Realtors association has hired a company from Mobile to do the construction on their new building in Robertsdale. Why wouldn't they hire a company from Baldwin County to do the building and spend their money in the county? The public needs to know about this. Editor's note: Construction is under way on a 13,000-square-foot office at Ala. 59 and U.S. 90 in Robertsdale for the Baldwin County Association of Realtors. WHLC Architecture of Fairhope designed the building, which will be built by Mobile-based Termac Construction using Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, guidelines, according to previous reports. Growth without tax cuts I hope all you Republicans notice that economic output has been growing for the past three months, without giving tax cuts to millionaires. Glad officials spoke up It was heartening to read that Frank Burt had the backbone to stand up to the Baldwin school board and tell them what the deal is. I admire Ed Bishop for taking the stand and saying people can't absorb additional sales taxes at this time. Whatever they do, I really hope it will be a public referendum and not a unilateral decision. The whole point, and Frank Burt said it, is that equity funding is the problem. Why hasn't this board spent time and energy trying to get that resolved instead of trying to quick fix? Taxpayers have been taxed enough already. Youthful leadership needed I'm calling about our school situation. I'm 62 years old and I don't need a tax, like anybody else, but I can't believe our bunch of retired, old commissioners. We need new lifeblood up there, someone who will move our county forward. The school system is the lifeblood of any community. They want to keep their retirement jobs. I hope voters will get these old fogies out of office and get some new blood up there. Change school leaders Someone said we have to give the schools that 1 percent tax in order to keep schools in good shape so our housing crisis doesn't go up another 30 percent. That caller was backward. We need to get better leadership in. It's fine if the school needs more money but we have to stop the leaders from wasting tax dollars. Before I'd give them a nickel, I want to see some major changes. I want to see a new superintendent and new Board of Education and a bunch of cuts at Bay Minette and Central Office. Elected jobs aren't permanent To any elected official: You were put there by our votes. You might not get there on the next election. I advocate any two-term limit and you're gone unless you do something to represent the people who put you there.
