Sound Off
Sunday, November 01, 2009
This is Baldwin Sound Off, where you may speak your mind on anything you wish. Because of the large number of calls we receive, we cannot publish all the comments. Plan deserves public support In regards to the tax incentives offered by Mayor (David) Wilson in the town of Summerdale to DHS Ventures in order to annex the Tractor Supply store, it's a no- brainer, and it should be overwhelmingly supported by the citizens of Summerdale and the Town Council. This business will provide a much-needed boost to our economy. More businesses will follow once the Tractor Supply is nearing completion. Not surprised by politicians Is it any wonder that another official in Baldwin County, or for any county in America for that matter, is yet again trying to get more money that he does not really deserve taken out of the taxpayers' pocket? Wake up, people. Still awaiting Amelia's arrival I have been waiting for months to see the new Amelia Earhart movie called "Amelia." At last I see it has hit the Mobile area but not here in Baldwin County. Why can't we get it here in Baldwin County so I can have a date and a movie? Questions series history In reference to the article in the Baldwin County sports section on Thursday morning about Fairhope playing Mary Montgomery: At the end of the article it states that Fairhope leads the series 30, 12 and 1, dating back to 1947. How could this be, since Mary Montgomery opened in 1966? Editor's note: Mary G. Montgomery was formed when Semmes High School was rebuilt and two smaller schools, Tanner Williams High and Wilmer High, were combined into the new facilities. The outcomes of football games played between Fairhope and Mary Montgomery were combined with the series record against Semmes. The Pirates beat MGM on Thursday night, increasing their overall series lead to 31-12-1. Give us individuals' views It is time for our school board members and our county commissioners to toot their own horns. What I want to hear from them is what they, as individuals, have said and done to resolve the financial crisis in our school system. I don't want to hear a lot of rhetoric and what the school board as a group and the county commissioners as a group are doing or not doing. Tell me what you are doing to resolve the problem, because I will remember that when election time comes. Make math higher priority It makes me sick that all this money is spent on athletic facilities. Our priorities are wrong. Athletes, especially football players, are treated like gods on campus. The money should be spent to teach kids how to improve their math skills and how to read and how to write better, and maybe for performing arts like music and stuff like that. Athletes can go out in the hot sun like we did when we were kids, and they can practice out there. They don't need fancy facilities to get strong and be good athletes. We're spending too much money on them. Golf carts 'great idea' About the golf carts in Craft Farms: I think that's a wonderful idea. My friend in Florida talks about how much gas she's saved by being able to use her electric golf cart instead of her automobile to run all around her subdivision. It's a great way for people to be able to shop and get around within their own little community. That's a great idea. Average folks not represented I've been calling Sound Off for years, and I mean years, talking about what the people in Washington that we elect, our elected officials, should be making, which should be what the average person in their state makes, not any more than that. They all have other jobs, they all are silver-spooned anyway; they shouldn't be making any more than the average person that they represent makes. That means, the person that called in about the burden is on the working family, if it's $32,000 average in the state of Alabama or Baldwin County, that representative from that area shouldn't make any more than that. That's only fair.
