Sound Off

Thursday, October 29, 2009

This is Baldwin Sound Off, where you may speak your mind on anything you wish. Because of the large number of calls we receive, we cannot publish all the comments.

Borderline savings The person who called in "Burden is on working families" — about going to Florida to buy his groceries: you don't do math, do you? On every $100 you would be paying only one more dollar for tax. How many miles do you have to drive back and forth to get to Florida, and how much do you pay for gas, and how many miles per gallon does your car get? Stop and think about it. You're spending more money than if you were to buy some groceries here in our area.

Tax talk 'ridiculous' I think that it's ridiculous that the Baldwin County Board of Education would want a tax increase if they've got money to build an inside sports complex at the Foley High School. If they've got money to do something like that, they don't need to increase my taxes. There are too many people unemployed at this point in time, and I don't hear a thing about (Superintendent Faron) Hollinger taking a cut in pay, nor (school system spokesman Terry) Wilhite, or (Chief Financial Officer Jean) McCutchen.

Editor's note: Last month the school board approved $886,300 in construction bids for an indoor athletic training facility at Foley High. It was part of a process approved three years ago to spend $3 million for athletic facility improvements in Robertsdale, Bay Minette and Foley, according to reports. The capital building funds could not be used for salaries and operational costs, officials have said.

Pilots would fit right in Here's a suggestion in the search for a new school superintendent. There are two recently unemployed Northwest Airlines pilots who may want the job. They forgot why they were up there flying and flew around in circles, wasting resources. They'd fit right in to our administration in the Baldwin County school system.

Officials have no answers Smokescreens and whistles, blah, blah, blah is what I heard from school board member Norm Moore and County Commissioner Skip Gruber at the meeting about the school financial woes at Elberta Middle School. You don't have any answers. You didn't have a plan. And you did not tell us anything other than the uncertainty of what the solutions are. All that I see is you trying to protect your offices and your positions.
