THE MOBILE Area Chamber of Commerce does not work for County Commissioner Stephen Nodine.

Pecans tradition in region
Scattered figures walk under the trees, their eyes on the ground oblivious to the lines of commuters passing on the two-lane roads.

Reform would help Alabama
One thing that has been missing from the health care discussions is a localized look at how the proposed reform measures would affect the health and well-being of our communities.

Glad to have Nodine I live in the Semmes area. We have been very proud of Steve Nodine's stewardship on the County Commission. I see Sound Off sort of bashed him today. We're very proud of him. He took an interest in our area, and we're glad to have him. He's a great commissioner.

Why advertise? I would like to know why Alabama Power Co., a Southern Company, which covers many states, spends millions of dollars on TV, radio, newspaper advertising when it is a monopoly?

Have I got a deal for you To the lady who was assaulted with the rifle butt hit to the head: I'd gladly offer you the use of my shotgun to use either end you wish on your assailant. If you are unable to do so yourself, I'd gladly offer you assistance and take your free shot for you.

FDA is going too far with oyster regulations
ALOUISIANA congressman compared federal food regulators' plan to rid the nation of oysters infected with a potentially deadly bacteria "to swatting a fly with a sledgehammer." Rep. Charlie Melancon should have added that the Food and Drug Administration's sledgehammer might do more damage to oystermen than to the rare bacterial infection the agency aims to eliminate.

Reporter walked the walk Kudos to Dan Murtaugh. Someone needed to get the ball rolling on fixing the dangerous sidewalks. Senior citizens should walk more, but in many cases, the areas are too dangerous.

Benefit costs take toll on key education programs
AT THE risk of ruffling the feathers "on some really big birds," Alabama Education Superintendent Joe Morton said recently that the schools are in desperate straits after two rounds of budget cuts and need a little help from their employees on the cost-cutting front.

Thanks to prosecutor, staff I'd like to take this time to congratulate Nikki Patterson, John Tyson and the staff who worked the Herman Thomas case. The jurors were afraid to sign whatever necessary papers, I believe. But one thing trumps the justice system: God.

Benjamin can get to work
SENATE REPUBLICANS ? helped along, we suspect, by their Alabama colleagues Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby ? did the right thing by withdrawing their blockade of Dr. Regina Benjamin's nomination as surgeon general.

DA made right decision in saying case is over
AT LEAST some of the jurors in the Herman Thomas trial now say they thought Mr. Thomas was guilty. But that doesn't matter.

What went wrong? I'm new to the area, and I've heard a lot about Prichard. I heard it was one of the largest cities in Alabama at one time. How did it get to be the place that it is today?

Privatization not Prichard's solution
ACITIZENS group in Prichard shouldn't try to turn the argument over the future of the city's water and sewer services into an ideological debate over the merits of privatizing government services.

Don't congratulate Thomas How can Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. congratulate Herman Thomas and his legal staff? How can he congratulate the man for escaping charges? I don't see where there's much to congratulate.
