Island village hit by suspected swine flu
| 11/7/2009, 3:16 a.m. CST RACHEL D'ORO
The Associated Press |
(AP) ANCHORAGE, Alaska - It could be the most isolated community in the nation-a wind-ripped village on a remote Alaska island with no passenger air service, now in the grip of suspected swine flu.
So many of the 130 residents of Diomede have been stricken with flu-like symptoms that the Alaska Army National Guard stepped in with a helicopter to transport a medical team there.
Three sick people, including a small child, also have been flown out of the traditional Eskimo community for treatment.
The medics arrived Thursday to administer doses of swine flu vaccine and deliver enough medicine to treat every resident if necessary.
Diomede is on the west coast of Little Diomede Island, located just 2 1/2 miles from Russia's Big Diomede Island in the Bering Strait.
