"A Large Load — The steamboat Tiger, Captain Archie Olds , brought down 1,780 bales of cotton yesterday. This is the largest load of the season, and with a fair list of passengers, speaks well for the first trip of the favorite 'animal.'"

Sunday, Nov. 7, 1909

"Hannis Taylor of Mobile was named at Washington as a possible successor to the late Justice Peckham of the United States Supreme Court."

"The new abattoir just completed for Haas Brothers' Packing Company will be opened to-day for public inspection and it is an interesting study in modern methods of handling packing house products in a perfectly sanitary manner. ... Cleanliness and the exclusion of flies and other insects is one of the first considerations in this modern slaughterhouse."

"During the past week a new educational venture has been inaugurated at the Barker Cotton Mill village in the shape of a night school for both sexes over the ages of 14. ... Thirty young people have enrolled for this work, which is being conducted cooperatively by the day school teachers, Miss Lombard and Miss Bessie Rencher , and Miss Kemble ."

"Miss Dorothy Danner of Mobile, who is a student at Holton Arms school in Washington, went to Annapolis Saturday, where she attended the Navy-Washington-Lee football game at the Naval academy bowl."

Sat., Nov. 7, 1959

"Mobile, the city of six flags, today becomes the city of four football teams. ... Mississippi Southern and North Carolina State start it off at 1:30 p.m. at Ladd Memorial Stadium. ... Before the dust settles, Alabama's Crimson Tide and Tulane's Green Wave will trot onto the field for a battle of water colors. Game time is 8 p.m. and a crowd of more than 30,000 is expected for this one."

"Carolyn Smith won the Mobile Country Club's women's golf championship with a 7 and 6 victory over Norma Jean Damrich ."
