Woman shares love of vintage items
Leverne Johnson loves to collect things, especially old things.
Once she owned 157 vintage hats, but decided it was time to "pass them on," had a big sale and sold them all.
She collected vintage clothing, too, but sold all those outfits.
These days earrings and jewelry from the 1940s and 1950s catch her eye.
"I collect just what I can hold in my hand," she said, referring to the dozens of pairs of clip-on rhinestone and glass-bead earrings and 50-year-old strings of pearls.
"I love to shop at American Thrift Store," Johnson said. "And I love Miriam Haskell baroque pearls."
She said, "One of my biggest finds, one of my happiest finds was a pair of Miriam Haskell baroque pearl tremblor earrings." She bought them for $2.98.
When she took them off the card, she said, "I was sitting in my car doing a happy dance."
In a good market, they sell for $75 to $125.
Johnson and her friend Joan Fuqua opened Endless Treasures, an antique and vintage specialty shop in the Crawford community near Semmes in 2006.
