Glover talks of life and Legislature
Rusty Glover has taught the same subject, at the same high school, for so long that he's beginning to see the children of former students in his classes.
But the first-term senator could soon have to choose between his seat in the Legislature and his career of 21 years.
Glover, a 43-year-old Republican from Semmes, is one of several lawmakers who also teach for public schools. Some who worked for the Alabama Community College System were investigated and convicted on charges that they collected pay from both jobs while doing very little work as educators during legislative sessions.
"I'm very careful to make sure that I'm never paid whenever we're in session," said Glover, who teaches history at Mary G. Montgomery High School in Semmes. "I'm very much against the double-dipping that some people have done in the past."
No allegations of wrongdoing have been made against Glover, who said he would favor legislation to ban community college employees from collecting two paychecks while in the Legislature. Should such a ban also extend to K-12 employees, Glover says he knows what he would do.
"I've made it clear to the governor and my colleagues that I would stay in the Legislature and end my teaching career," Glover said.
