MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Chastang, Hankins still undefeated
Chastang and Hankins remain unbeaten while Denton, Eanes, Calloway-Smith and Semmes have just one loss apiece in Mobile County middle school football.
Mobile County Training picked up a big win while Alba and North Mobile lit up the scoreboard in a showdown. St. Paul's defeated UMS-Wright in the Baldwin County middle school league.
Chastang 36, Pillans 14: Devin Adams fired a 70-yard TD pass to Keontae McCants on the first play of the game as Chastang (5-0) routed Pillans. Adams threw for 250 yards with 2 TDs, three 2-point conversions, and rushed for a TD. McCants added two 2-point conversions while Samuel Green had a TD catch and a hauled in a 2-point conversion. Delorean Bethay totaled 170 yards on 3 touches with120 yards rushing on two carries that resulted in touchdowns a reception for 50 yards. Pillans narrowed the score to 16-14 early in the third quarter before the Falcons went to work.
"We have a good team while the guys play hard and play well together," Chastang coach Sam Shelton said. "There are a lot of things we can improve on but we can't relax because everybody wants to beat Chastang."
Hankins 14, Grand Bay 6: Jamey Mosley tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jarius Hackworth and a 2-point conversion to Wallace Pruitt as the Cougars (4-0) edged Grand Bay (1-4). Chance Rankins rushed for a 10-yard TD after Demario Walters hauled in a 48-yard reception to set up the score. Jerry Gibson had 3 catches for 40 yards to aid the Hankins' offense. Claude Davis and Kendrick Watford dominated the defensive line and Hunter Walker grabbed an interception for Hankins.
"Grand Bay has a fine football team and it was a very physical game," Hankins coach Keith Gorum said. "We are glad to be 4-0, but we have a long way to go with a lot of work ahead of us."
Calloway-Smith 34, Lott 12: Mason Marzette threw two touchdown passes and Kyron Boone rushed for two TDs as the Wildcats (3-1) walloped Lott. Marzette, who has thrown 8 touchdown passes this season, connected with Rodney Stafford for two TD passes of 30 and 20 yards.
Boone's TD runs were 80 and 30 yards and he finished with finished the game with 150 yards rushing while the Wildcats rolled up more than 300 yards of total offense. Justin Nobles contributed the other score on a 10-yard run.
"We must play better on defense if we are going to make a serious run at a championship and we must stop giving up scoring plays on defense," Calloway coach Raymond Peyton said.
Semmes 8, Causey 0: Jalen Tuggle rushed for 12-yard touchdown and Joey Smiley caught a pass for the 2-point conversion as the Bulldogs (3-1) blanked the Causey Tigers (1-3). Josh Daniels caused a fumble and Fuller Oliver had the recovery for Semmes' coach John Jenkins' defense. Causey coach Tim Miller praised the Semmes team and admitted that his Tigers could not find any rhythm on offense throughout the entire game.
