Flag ceremony today at Legion Post 250

At 11 a.m. today, American Legion Post No. 250 will be the site of a flag disposal ceremony and District 33 picnic.

Commander Charles Beech said that the public is invited to the ceremony and is encouraged to bring worn and faded American flags to the post, 10950 Dauphin Island Parkway, for proper disposal. For information, call 251-973-1116.

Today is Homecoming with Dinner on the Ground at Good Shepherd Church, 5051 Plantation Road in Theodore. Southern Joy will be featured in concert. Bill Thompson is pastor at Good Shepherd Church.

Lana McGuff, media specialist at Alba Middle School in Bayou La Batre, said parents and the community are invited to Alba Middle at 5 p.m. Monday to meet Billy Moore , author of "Cracker's Mule."

Moore will make a presentation about the writing process and what it is like to be a published author, and he will impart to his audience the history underlying his books.

Following Parenting Day activities, guests are encouraged to meet in the Alba Middle School Library for "some old-fashioned storytelling, coffee and a variety of sweets," McGuff said. Books that will be on sale include "Cracker's Mule" and Moore's "Little Brother Real Snake."

Grand Bay Garden Club meets Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Grand Bay-St. Elmo Community Center, 11610 Hwy. 90 W. in Grand Bay. For information, call Lynda Jones , 251-865-6290.

Bayou La Batre Area Chamber of Commerce will meet at noon Tuesday at the community center, 12754 Padgett Switch Road. For information, call Rachel Barbour , 251-824-4088.

Senior Citizens Christian Fellowship Club meets Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Tillman's Corner, 5660 Three Notch Road. The club is for all community seniors. For details, call Robert Harris , 251-666-3144.

Community Awareness Day to benefit south Mobile County public schools and the Fowl River Area Civic Association is Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. at St. Philip Neri Community Center, Dauphin Island Parkway and Laurendine Road.
