Wednesday, November 04, 2009

Staff Report

ATMORE — Alabama Department of Corrections death row inmate David Larry Nelson, 64, was pronounced dead at approximately 11:10 p.m. on Monday.

Nelson died of natural causes in the infirmary of Holman Correctional Facility, according to a corrections spokesman.

Nelson was sentenced to die for the Jan. 1, 1978, shooting death of Wilson W. Thompson in Kimberly, a suburb of Birmingham. Nelson also was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole for the fatal shooting of Birmingham cab driver James Cash the night before.

Nelson served more than 27 years on Alabama's death row, twice avoiding execution dates, in 1996 and 2003.
