Prichard robbery suspect shot

A man suspected of robbing a 24-hour restaurant in Prichard on Friday was shot shortly after the holdup, but police released few details about either incident.

A man armed with a handgun walked into the Golden Egg Restaurant, 3107 St. Stephens Road, at about 5:45 a.m., demanding cash, a news release from Prichard police stated.

The man was shot as he tried to flee the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, police said, but police spokeswoman Latoya Veal declined to say whether he was still on restaurant property.

The suspect was identified as Rodriguez Demetrius Toney of Mobile, the release stated.

Veal declined to say who shot Toney, but said police were not involved in the shooting.

Toney was believed to be linked to at least one other robbery at the Golden Egg.

Last month, an armed robber snatched a cash register from the restaurant after the manager refused to hand over money, police said. In August, another robbery occurred at the restaurant when police said a man held a towel over his face, flashed a weapon and snatched an undisclosed amount of cash.

Toney was taken to the University of South Alabama Medical Center on Friday morning, police said. A hospital spokeswoman said Toney was not being treated there Friday afternoon.
