Locally-made, family film 'When I Find the Ocean' to screen in Montgomery

by Ginger Swan
Sunday August 10, 2008, 11:32 AM

Today only, Director Tonya S. Holly will be at the Capri Theatre for a 3 p.m. screening of the independent film, When I Find the Ocean.

The film -- shot locally in Alabama and Tennessee -- is said to be a good choice for kids, and IMDb likens it to the 90s-kids' favorite, Homeward Bound.

"The journey of a lifetime for young Lily Strickland begins not out of her love for adventure but out of heartache. Longing for the father she lost to the ocean and having no way to say goodbye, Lily strikes out on her own."

by Ginger Swan
Friday August 08, 2008, 8:47 PM

Charter Communications and Sidewalk have created Sidewalk Chalk, a filmmaking contest to raise awareness for childhood cancer. With nearly 50 adolescents being diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. everyday, Charter works with the Janie Sims Foundation to offer support for children with cancer and their families.

"We're excited to partner with Charter to be able to provide a unique opportunity for filmmakers--locally and across the nation--to win such a substantial prize honing their craft for such a wonderful cause," said Catherine Pfitzer, Sidewalk's executive director.

Sidewalk Chalk Filmmakers are asked to create a short film to raise awareness of pediatric cancer. The winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize plus a handcrafted, cast-iron award sculpture from a local Sloss Furnaces artist. The winner will be announced at the Sidewalk film festival at the end of September.

Some clever linguistics guru somewhere even came up with a word for this pop-culture phenomenon: the "Bromance."

"Pineapple Express" tries to breathe some fresh life into this comic genre by turning it into a serious action movie. But because it tries to be both, it doesn't completely work on either level.

by Jake Coyle -- Associated Press
Sunday August 03, 2008, 1:07 AM

With Will Ferrell, you get a movie, bunches of humor and music, too

It's often said all actors want to be rock stars. Will Ferrell has gotten to be both.

Nearly every Ferrell movie has given the comedian wide berth to, as Christopher Walken once urged him to in the famous "Saturday Night Live" cowbell sketch, "explore the space."
