Look for specters along Alabama Ghost Trail

A proud homeowner who walks through her house, checking to make sure everything is in order. A disgraced banker who refuses to leave his home until his name is cleared. A party girl who just wants to have fun all the time. They all are apparitions who have made appearances along Alabama's Ghost Trail, opened a few months ago. The trail mostly highlights other-worldly spots in Dallas, Perry and Wilcox counties, though some other locales make appearances as well. The area, it seems, is rich in tales, with stories passed down for generations. As one resident of the area pointed out, "We have plenty of `haints' to choose from." While some would choose to shun those earth-bound spirits, this part of Alabama dusts off the welcome mat and ushers them in. "In the Black Belt, we don't really care how much money you have," said Kathryn Tucker Windham, herself a resident of the region. "We just want to know if you can tell a good story." For those brave enough to explore them, the Halloween season might be the perfect time to check out some sites along the Ghost Trail. Because it is self-guided, you can start anywhere you choose and see as many of the spooky locations as you dare. MORE LIVING
