Bowl parade in Mobile tonight

Neptune's Daughters roll with the 2008 GMAC Bowl Parade.The parade will use a modified Route A and feature 20 floats -- all the emblem floats of Mobile's parading mystic societies.
Also taking part will be marching bands and cheerleaders of the participating universities, and several local marching bands.

Artist couple are curators for show of contemporary glass at Space 301
Rick and Nikki Schneider are curators for a new show at Space 301 Gallery in downtown Mobile that is set to open Jan. 9.We live, work and drive behind windows; we drink and eat from glass; we check our appearance in the bathroom mirror; and many of us read the newspaper beneath glass lampshades illuminated by glass lightbulbs.
The Bull brings taste of Southwest to south Alabama

Brisket Rostisado at The Bull on Dauphin Street is flavored with a chipotle dry rub and then slow-roasted all day. It is served with a spicy potato mixture and simmered greens.The Bull, 609 Dauphin St., is the brainchild of Mobile restaurateur and new wave entrepreneur Wendell Quimby. It is, in true Quimby fashion, a unique mix of the old the new.
It is the latest in a new crop of restaurants to open, but this one features something different -- a menu unlike many others in the area. It offers authentic Southwestern cuisine with an upper Gulf Coast twang.

Clockwise: Dev Patel and Anil Kapoor in "Slumdog Millionaire," Bradley Cooper, Jim Carrey and Danny Masterson in "Yes Man," Will Smith in "Seven Pounds," The animated movie "The Tale of Desperaux."If ever there was a week to decide to go to the movies in Birmingham, this would be it.
Eleven movies are opening today and Christmas Day, including a couple of highly awaited family comedies and some heavy-duty Oscar contenders.
But how to choose between Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise and Richard Nixon and Will Smith? We've got you covered.
Here's a look at the major flicks, along with whether they'll be around come Oscar-time and whether they're appropriate for a family outing on Christmas afternoon.
GMAC Bowl Game Parade

The 10th annual Greer's Food Tiger GMAC bowl game parade rolled at 6:30 this evening under wonderful warm skies. With over 20 units including the city's politicians and ESPN official as well as many of the Mobile Mardi Gras organizations emblem floats. There was a large crowd at the beginning of the parades as the procession rolled by. The University of Tulsa and Ball State University marching bands seemed to get into the spirit as they marched by. The Mystic Stripers, La Luna, Mobile Mystics, Neptune's Daughter's and Pharaohs were just a few of the many local mystic groups that participated. The Mystics of Time dragon, Verna dean was one of the highlights of the evening as she blew smoke and fire toward the crowds of people to the sound of cheers. The Greer's Food Tiger giant shopping cart was also a crowd pleaser with its loud pipe blaring. If you weren't there you missed a terrific time.

BCS championship game to be shown live and in 3-D at Carmike Wynnsong 16 in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. -- Carmike Cinemas' Wynnsong 16 movie theater in Mobile will be one of only 81 theaters in the country to show the biggest game in college football live and in 3-D on Thursday.
The game -- pitting the University of Florida against the University of Oklahoma in a championship contest to be waged in Miami -- will be televised at 7 p.m. Thursday on the Fox network.
But the Carmike theater will be the only venue in the Mobile area to watch the Florida Gators and the Oklahoma Sooners play in the FedEx BCS National Championship Game in 3-D on a giant screen, according to the motion picture exhibition company based in Columbus, Ga.

MOBILE, Ala. -- Last year's documentary about Mardi Gras in Mobile, "The Order of Myths," will be available on DVD beginning next week.
Filmmaker Margaret Brown is interviewed before the July 31, 2008, Mobile, Ala., premier of "The Order of Myths." The 80-minute film by native Mobilian Margaret Brown, which touched on sensitive nerves in Mobile and opened eyes around the country for its focus on the racially divided Carnival celebrations in the filmmaker's hometown, is being released on the home video format on Tuesday, Jan. 13, by New Yorker Films and The Cinema Guild.

First, an update on our friends at Mobile Shakespeare Company:
The MSC production of "Much Ado About Nothing" will have performances Jan. 23-25 and Jan. 29-Feb. 1 on the third floor of Hurricane Brewing Company, 225 Dauphin St. in downtown Mobile. Brent Murrill, newly named executive direc tor of the company, says the production was moved ahead because of a conflict with the Mardi Gras parade schedule.

Do not raid tombs wearing wetsuit until 30 minutes after eating.It's a free download. So the makers have no one to blame but themselves when they go broke, because this thing would have sold like hotcakes. Better than hotcakes, even.
Finally, someone comes through in this economy to help the needy and less fortunate. Namely, the video game players who would like for their video game-ized picture of a woman to wear a picture of a wetsuit.

Mobile's Moon Pie rising

Tonight's the night: Big Moon Pie goes up at the stroke of midnight downtown
Tory Johnston of Chattanooga Bakery displays the world's largest edible Moon Pie as he arrives in Mobile on Tuesday.His colleagues on the Mobile City Council call him "Moon Pie." People stop him in restaurants to talk about the Moon Pie. After Tuesday's council meeting, he even donned a Moon Pie hat.
One might think that Richardson would be sick of Moon Pies by now, after hearing about them for hours on end since he announced a month ago that he spent $9,000 of taxpayer money to create a 12-foot-tall mechanical Moon Pie for the city's New Year's Eve celebration.
Wanted: 80 trucks to pull Mobile's Mardi Gras floats

Because of the economic downturn, automakers aren't stepping up to help, and parade planners are worried
King Felix on foot? King Elexis thumbing a ride?
While things aren't that grim yet, the man in charge of Mardi Gras float propulsion is clearly worried.
"We're desperate for trucks," said Sonny Davis, president of the Mobile Mardi Gras Parading and Non-Parading Association. "Our last meeting is Jan. 14, and at that point we'll need to pull together all the loose ends and be ready to get on the road."
