Fast. Friendly. Filling.

Mei Wei Asian Bistro is all three and more.

Housed in the former location of Mama Fu's at 6290 University Drive, Mei Wei follows the Nothing but Noodles fast-casual concept. At Mei Wei's you order, get a number and get a drink, and a server brings out the food before you can say "edamame."

Mei Wei's menu offers lots of Asian-inspired dishes that span the continent from pad Thai and fried rice to kung pao and teriyaki. There's also a range of salads and soups.

For starters, the egg rolls - stuffed with cabbage, ginger, broccoli, carrots and onion - are a must. Deep-fried to crispy perfection, the egg rolls (two for $3.75) are about the size of the Great Wall of China and really filling. Mei Wei's sweet-and-sour sauce complements the egg rolls nicely.

Another good starter is the wonton soup ($2). Made with a light chicken broth, the soup's fluffy wonton noodles are big and tasty. And don't forget to add a few fried wonton strips to the soup.

If you're not already stuffed from the soup and egg rolls, Mei Wei's main courses will put you and your stomach over the edge. Served with white or brown rice, the Mei Wei Favorites, such as the Thai coconut curry and sweet-and-sour, come piled high.

Each entre is made with chicken, beef, shrimp or tofu. If you're not sure about the ingredients in a particular dish or need a suggestion, ask one of Mei Wei's helpful cashiers.

General Tao made with crispy chunks of chicken ($6.95) is an excellent choice. A mix of thick chile vinegar sauce, carrots, broccoli and rice sticks, the dish puts a twist on the General Tso's chicken entre found on most Chinese restaurant menus.

The Spicy Mei Wei with tofu ($6.95), made with ginger soy sauce, garlic, scallions, white onions, carrots and snow peas, isn't overly spicy but has some heat to it. The choice of tofu may have been a mistake.
