Paste Magazine's new "Best of What's Next" issue features two bands from Alabama among their list of "26 emerging artists you must know" (or, as alternately noted, "up-and-coming artists that you ignore at your peril"). The Bridges, from Oxford, Alabama, and Wild Sweet Orange, from Birmingham, both made the cut. Brittany Painter of The Bridges even graces the cover.

Aruna Sairam takes listeners on magic carpet ride

    by Michael Huebner
    Sunday August 10, 2008, 7:56 PM

Even by Indian classical music standards, three and a half hours may seem excessive for a concert, but time flies when you're on a magic carpet.

That's the analogy Aruna Sairam used for the second half of her concert Sunday at the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center, and it fit. The Carnatic (South Indian) vocalist, whose career is flying high after a Carnegie Hall debut and recent Harmonia Mundi CD, took enthusiastic listeners on a journey through India's folk music traditions, from Tanjore and her native Bombay to Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. She described -- in music, words and speech-song -- women in colorful saris that brightened up the desert sands, a little calf at Krishna's feet, and pilgrimages where people sang as they walked. Culinard Cafe in the old Sears building that has become the Innovation Depot is sleek and filled with light.

Culinard Cafe is perfect for Innovation Depot. This is highly imaginative food. Standbys such as grilled cheese and tuna salad become standouts in this teaching kitchen. And what these folks do with food is, well, nothing short of innovative.

What AAA radio means for Birmingham and why it will work

    by Scott Register
    Monday August 18, 2008, 4:25 PM

Bruce Springsteen's "Radio Nowhere" kicked off Live 100.5 - Birmingham's Modern Music.
Last Friday at 10:05 AM was a big deal for myself, Reg's Coffee House and music in Birmingham, AL as the city's first AAA Hybrid radio station, WWMM - Live 100.5 - Birmingham's Modern Music, hit the airwaves with Bruce Springsteen growling "This Is Radio Nowhere." To say it has been a long time coming would be an understatement at best. The adult alternative market in this town has been virtually ignored the last few years, and with the exception of WRAX, the birthplace of Reg's Coffee House back in 1997, it has barely been served at all in recent memory. Well, that just changed and I couldn't be more pleased. Continue reading "What AAA radio means for Birmingham and why it will work" »

'Clone Wars' is fun though forgettable

by David Germain, The Associated Press
    Thursday August 14, 2008, 10:04 AM

    Star Wars: The Clone Wars
With the voices of Matt Lanter, Ashley Eckstein, James Arnold Taylor, Tom Kane, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Daniels, Christopher Lee. Directed by Dave Filoni.
Rated: PG for sci-fi action violence throughout, brief language and momentary smoking.
    Running time: 98 minutes.
    2½ stars (out of 4)
    Trailer: QuickTime | IMDb
    Showtimes
You'll know you're in a different galaxy within the first seconds of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," which substitutes the Warner Bros. logo and theme music for the familiar 20th Century Fox searchlight and fanfare.

While anything remotely "Star Wars" potentially is a welcome trek for hard-core fans, however, it will be a mixed thrill given that the saga returns to the big screen as a cartoon.

    Portraits of a storm

    by Thomas Harrison
    Wednesday August 20, 2008, 11:57 AM

    Charles Barbier's "Flight."
August along the Gulf Coast brings unwanted thoughts and discomfiting images from seasons past.

Three years ago our region was struck by a cataclysmic storm that destroyed much of the New Orleans we all knew and loved, along with other familiar places nearby such as Waveland, Biloxi and Bay St. Louis. The hurricane called Katrina left a region traumatized and still scrambling to put the pieces back together.

The arts community was broken and scattered, but many artists took refuge and some of them returned in the aftermath to resume their work and make sense of it all. Not surprisingly, much of their work focused on the disaster that altered their lives and the Gulf Coast landscape.

Video: Here's Band-Aid that needs help

    by Chris Welch
    Wednesday August 20, 2008, 9:00 AM

On Saturday night, WZYP and Railroad Bazaar are hosting a Battle of the Bands at the Von Braun Center's South Hall II and we here at Go: Your good Times magazine decided to enter a band.

We do have some talented musicians. Go Writer Jon Busdeker plays the drums from time to time, schools writer Steve "The Matador" Campbell dabbles with the guitar and advertising executive Christie Vail learned how to play the flute "at band camp."

So, we decided to rehearse a bit at Railroad Bazaar on University Drive. You can see for yourself, it's Go Writer Chris Welch, advertising exec Lacy Pruitt, Vail, "The Matador" and two willing guys from Railroad Bazaar, Gabe and Joseph.

And, you know what, we don't sound have bad.

Well, at least until we started singing.

So, check us out and see if we don't sound a little like Lynyrd Skynyrd ... on acid.

Mobile Botanical Gardens raises money with benefit dinner at True

    by David Holloway
    Wednesday August 20, 2008, 7:41 AM

True, the upscale restaurant near Spring Hill, will be the setting for Monday's benefit for the Mobile Botanical Gardens.

Chef Wesley True works in the kitchen at his restaurant, True, in Mobile.
It will feature a high-end, contemporary three-course meal prepared by chef Wesley True and his staff. Chef True, a Culinary Institute of America-trained chef, was still fiddling with the menu last week.

But he said he was toying with the notion of serving such tasty offerings as smoked scallops with corn soup along with grass-fed hanger steak.

DeKalb County town celebrates UFO past with family festival

    by Associated Press
    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 11:29 AM

FYFFE -- The town of Fyffe has turned a string of UFO sightings from nine years ago into an annual weekend festival.

The town attracted international attention and developed a mini-industry when hundreds turned up to search the night sky for flying saucers in early 1989.

Now the city of less than 1,000 is holding its fourth Unforgettable Family Outing or UFO Days on Friday and Saturday.

Fyffe Mayor Larry Lingerfelt said the festival has grown every year and the town decided to embrace their reputation as the UFO capital of Alabama.

This year, there will be helicopter rides for the first time at the free festival along with music, hot-air balloon rides and live music.

Well-known Mobile Chef Michael Ivy is putting the finishing touches on his new downtown eatery, Michael's Downtown.

No date is set for the opening, but Ivy is hoping to be up and running very soon. The restaurant, located at 101 N. Conception St., will seat about 35. The menu will change daily, he said.

Ivy was owner of Michael's Midtown Cafe, which closed in 2000 after he was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. He underwent a liver transplant last year and said he's in good health these days.

    Having fun in Japan

    by Alec Harvey
    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 7:28 AM

Trussville's Justin Wood came home with $250,000 for winning ABC's 'I Survived a Japanese Game Show'

Finalists Meaghan Cooper, Jusin Wood, and Donnell Pitman get ready to compete under the watchful eye of Rome Kanda and Judge Bob on "I Survived a Japanese Game Show."
Justin Wood wasn't quite sure what he signed up for when he answered an ad for an ABC casting call earlier this year.

"They said if you're physically fit and proud of your hometown and have a big personality, try out for the show," he says. "I was under the impression that it was a reality show in Los Angeles."

But the 24-year-old Trussville man couldn't have been more wrong. ABC flew the contestants to Tokyo, where they competed on "I Survived a Japanese Game Show."

    I survived my first triathlon

    by Chris Welch
    Monday August 18, 2008, 10:12 PM

Well, I'm living proof that anybody can do a triathlon.

On Saturday, I survived my first triathlon, the HiWAAY Sprint Triathlon. And, it was a blast. A tired blast, that is.

I finished 392nd out of 471 or so runners with a time of 1 hour, 11 minutes. I think I ran 29 or so minutes for the 3-mile run (first), 31 minutes for the 6-mile bike (that includes a 5-minute hug from mom afterward, ha) and 11 minutes for my 400 meter swim.
