Call center to lay off 150
Customer call center Sitel said Wednesday that it will lay off more than 150 people in Covington County on Dec. 1.
Sitel, based in Nashville, Tenn., had hired about 200 people earlier this year, adding to the 400-person workforce at its location between Andalusia and Opp. Andalusia Mayor Earl Johnson said the cut is significant, but he's confident the remainder of the workforce will remain stable.
Area businesses win quality awards
Hancock Holding Co. and Lynwood Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center are among the nine employers winning 2009 Alabama Quality Awards, the Alabama Productivity Center said Wednesday.
Gulfport-based bank owner Hancock won a Level 2-Progress Toward Excellence Award in the service sector.
Mobile's Lynwood won a Level 1- Commitment to Excellence award in the health sector.
The top Alabama Excellence Awards went to Mayer Electric Supply Co. Inc. of Birmingham for the service sector, and Talladega Healthcare Center of Talladega and the University of Alabama at Birmingham's hospital for the health care sector.
In a category for employee teams, Infirmary Health System's hand hygiene quality initiative won a bronze award.
