Spirit of Hope honors Still Serving Veterans

Director humbled by award, cites help from community

William Webb's son, David, was serving with the Army in Iraq several years ago when his closest friend was severely injured by an improvised explosive device.

Webb, who was then CEO of Time Domain, visited the wounded warrior at Walter Reed Army Hospital when he was in Washington, D.C., with some other Huntsville business and civic leaders. They prayed for the young man, talked about his sacrifice for his country and the help he would need in the future.

"We resolved to do something," Webb said.

In 2005, they formed the nonprofit group Still Serving Veterans, which has since helped more than 1,200 former soldiers and their families connect with available medical, rehabilitation, counseling, career training and other resources.

Last week, Still Serving Veterans was presented the Army's Spirit of Hope Award in ceremonies at the Hall of Heroes in the Pentagon.

"It was humbling," said Dr. Werner Baker, SSV's executive director.

"This gives us more credibility among the thousands of other organizations," said Webb, who retired from Time Domain and is SSV's president.

The five military services and Department of Defense each nominate individuals or groups for a Spirit of Hope award each year. It is named for legendary entertainer and troop-supporter Bob Hope, and the medal is struck with his portrait. His daughter, Linda Hope, was at the ceremonies this year.

Also attending were Still Serving Veterans board members, staff and supporters, including Lt. Gen. James Pillsbury and his wife, Becky, the founding vice chair of the board; U.S. Rep. Parker Griffith and his wife, Virginia; Joe Collazo; Jeff Wishik; Redstone Arsenal Garrison Commander Col. Robert Pastorelli; and Ronnie Chronister, deputy to the Commanding General of the Army Space and Missile Lifecycle Management Command at Redstone.
