A day of multi-purpose

Homecoming game perfect chance for Tigers to ready for SEC stretch AUBURN - When Auburn snapped its three-game losing streak a week ago against Ole Miss, it transformed today's homecoming game from a gloomy interruption in a sinking season to an important day of preparation. The Tigers (6-3) would love to use the game against Furman (4-4) to rest starters, equip youngsters, heal injuries and prepare mentally for season-ending games against Georgia and Alabama. A win over the Paladins, a Championship Subdivision school, would give Auburn a school-record 18 consecutive homecoming victories. Coach Gene Chizik doesn't think his team will overlook a lower-division opponent. "I mean, you always worry about that, obviously," Chizik said. "But as a general rule for us and our team, I don't think (it's a concern). They've been really focused." Coaches are cautious about discussing the prospect of resting starters, but having played nine consecutive weeks of football, that's clearly a goal. The Tigers would love to see ample playing time for reserves on both sides of the line. Backup quarterback Neil Caudle could also see some time running the offense. Chizik hasn't committed to doing so, but another week of rest seems likely for freshman tailback Onterio McCalebb, who has been bothered by an ankle injury. "Our goal with him is to make sure he's at 100 percent," Chizik said. "He's just been a little bit off that mark. The goal (last week) was to rest him and if we have to again this week, we will." Last week freshman receiver Travante Stallworth ran some sweeps and end-arounds - the kind of stuff that is McCalebb's hallmark - and could see more action again today. MORE SPORTS
