    State banking regulators seized First Lowndes Bank at 5 p.m., handing it over to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. in Alabama's first bank failure of 2010. The FDIC conveyed the bank's $131.1 million in deposits and $137.2 million in assets to First Citizens Bank of Luverne, which will operate the four branches under its name starting Saturday.     A 19-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder today in connection with a fatal weekend shooting. Meanwhile, police were searching for four other people including a juvenile wanted in the slaying of 26-year-old Christopher Anthino Walters, who was gunned down in the 1200 block of Arlington Street on Sunday afternoon, Mobile police said in a news release. Full story »

    Alabama, Florida compete to build Gulf of Mexico's longest pier

    When it opens in May, the Navarre Beach pier will reach 1,545 feet into the Gulf. That will be about 5 feet longer than the $16.2 million pier the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources opened at Gulf State Park in July, where anglers can stand so far out into the open water that sailfish have been hoisted over the rails.  Full story »
